How to bottle garden:
What is needed?
- Plant container with a lid
- Plants of your choice
- Gravel
- Wood or activated charcoal
- Potting soil, plant granules
- Tweezers
- Cardboard tube
- Long-handled spoon
- Optional: Stones, shells, small branches
Here’s how it’s done! Begin by thoroughly cleaning the gravel and container with boiling water to ensure a sterile environment. Next, add the base layers by filling the container with 2–3 cm of gravel, followed by 1 cm of wood or activated charcoal, and 3–4 cm of dry potting soil. To make this process neater, you can use a cardboard tube to guide the layers into place.
Once the base is ready, trim any long roots from your plants. Dig small holes in the soil with a long-handled spoon and carefully place the plants into the holes using tweezers. Add some moss between the plants, ensuring not to cover all the soil for a natural look.
Now, it’s time to personalise your bottle garden. Add decorative elements like stones, shells, or small branches to give it your own unique touch. Finally, water the garden lightly with rainwater, if possible, and seal the container tightly. Water approximately once a month, and occasionally open the lid to prevent mould from forming. Be sure to remove any decaying plant material as needed.
Your bottle garden is now complete and ready to thrive as a delightful mini-ecosystem!
And your garden in a glass is complete! This little green universe thrives best in a bright spot, but away from direct sunlight.
